How to Knit a Star Toe

The star toe is another great alternative to the more commonly used wedge toe. I found out about this method of finishing a top down sock toe from Nancy Bush’s excellent book Folk Socks, and although it looks a little strange, it fits really well. It also requires really minimal row counting, and doesn’t need to be joined with Kitchener stitch. I think it’s my new preferred method to knit toes!

Star toes are worked on four double pointed needles, with the fifth being used as a working needle. Stitches are decreased at the end of each needle, resulting in four lines of decreases that wrap around the toe in a star shape. The star toe is worked across a multiple of four stitches, and can be lengthened or shortened by adding or taking away knit rounds.

Round 1: *Knit to last 2 stitches on needle, Knit two together (k2tog). Repeat from * 3 more times.

Round 2: Knit across round.

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 a total of 6 times, then repeat round 1 until 8 stitches remain. Cut the yarn leaving a tail, then thread the tail through the remaining stitches using a blunt tapestry needle.
