Tutorials

The Twisted Headband is knitted in double stockinette stitch, which creates a double layer of fabric by knitting every other stitch on one side of the fabric, and slipping them on the reverse.

The recommended cast on for the headband is the Long Tail Cast On.

To work double stockinette stitch you only need to use a Knit Stitch (no purling required!)

To ensure that the cast off edge is the same length as the cast on edge (as you’ll be sewing them together) use a standard cast off.

Twisted Headband Knitting Instructions

Materials

-1 ball &Make Aran yarn (each 100g ball contains approx 150m, or enough for 2 headbands)

-A pair of 5mm straight or circular knitting needles,

-sewing needle (for seaming)

Gauge

16 stitches and 20 rows = 10cm in stockinette stitch

Construction

The headband is knitted flat in double stockinette stitch, which creates a fully reversible fabric. It is then seamed with a twist detail at the end.

Size

The finished headband is 9cm wide and has a head circumference of approximately 52cm. The length is determined by trying it on as you knit, and the width can be increased or decreased by adding or removing stitches in multiples of 2 from the cast on.

Pattern

Cast on 28 stitches using a long-tail cast on.

Row 1: Knit one stitch, slip one stitch with the yarn in front (as if to purl). Repeat these two stitches across the whole row. Turn work.

Repeat row 1 until the headband measures 52cm, or the desired length (check by wrapping it around your head).

Cast off and cut yarn leaving a 30cm tail.

Seaming

Lay the headband flat - the side that is facing up will be the right side. Fold each end into a v shape with the points facing outwards. Bring the ends together so that one leg of each v slots into the centre of the other v. Use the tail of the yarn to sew along the folded edge. This creates the twist and closes the headband.

Finishing

Weave in ends then soak the headband in lukewarm water with a little wool wash. Rinse gently and press between two towels to remove any excess water. Dry flat.
