Casting on is the first stage of any piece of knitting. It’s how you get your stitches onto the needles so that you can begin to knit them. This means that it’s the first thing you need to learn when you start to knit. The method below, called ‘knitting on’, is a really great cast on to learn as a beginner because it uses a modified knit stitch. This means that you will learn how to knit as you learn how to cast on!

Once you’ve cast on, the next step is to learn how to make a knit stitch.

As you get more confident you will probably want to learn some other methods of casting on (patterns will normally suggest a method). One that is really widely used is the long tail cast on.
